The Federal Member for Wentworth, Dave Sharma MP, has welcomed the announcement by Home Affairs Minister Karen Andrews that the Australian Government will list the entirety of Hezbollah as a terrorist organisation.
The decision follows a unanimous and bipartisan recommendation from the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security in June.
Dave Sharma MP said, "This is a welcome and critical decision, and a victory for common sense. It closes a loophole in Australia's anti-terrorism framework and dispenses with the fiction that Hezbollah has a 'military' and a'political' wing. It is a terrorist organisation in its entirety, as this designation now makes clear."
"Going back several years, since my time as Australian Ambassador to Israel, I have been making the case for the listing of Hezbollah in its entirety," Mr Sharma continued.
"Since being elected to Parliament, I have raised the issue on multiple occasions with Home Affairs Minister Karen Andrews and her predecessor in that role, Peter Dutton."
"I am very pleased that the Government has now determined to act."
"I commend the many community organisations and leaders who have persistently advocated for this outcome," Mr Sharma added.
