Wentworth, Australia

I'm Dave Sharma

I ran for Wentworth because I am committed to public service and protecting Australia for future generations. I want to protect our unique environment and quality of life, provide strong economic management and opportunity, improve local infrastructure, take action on climate change, and prepare our nation for the challenges of the future.

About me

"I promise to work tirelessly to repay the trust the voters of Wentworth have placed in me."

December 1975
I was born in Canada to an Australian mother and an Indian father, who met in London in the 1960s. Our family, including my two twin sisters, moved to Sydney when I was very young. We lived a happy family life until we tragically lost my mum to breast cancer when I was twelve. From then on I was raised by my Dad. It wasn’t an easy time, but we got through it together. And the lessons I learnt – about the importance of family, the value of hard work and self-reliance – I take with me to this day.
November 1993
I completed by HSC at my local public high school, finishing with a TER of 100.00, and went on to study science and law at Cambridge University, graduating with first class honours in 1997.

February 1999
I returned to Australia and, after a brief stint studying medicine (and deciding it was not for me), I joined the Department of Foreign Affairs as a graduate.
2000 – 2003
I worked as an Australian diplomat in Bougainville and Papua New Guinea, helping to negotiate a peace agreement to bring to an end a ten-year civil war. Peace prevails in Bougainville to this day, and I was awarded the Australian Service Medal for my contribution.
My wife Rachel and I were married. Sixteen years later, we remain very much in love!
I was stationed as a diplomat at the Australian Embassy in Washington DC, working to strengthen the Australia-US alliance and cooperate on issues of East Asian security and the Middle East.

I worked closely with senior figures in the Bush and Obama Administrations. Our two eldest daughters were born in Washington DC.
2010 – 2012
I headed up the International Division in the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet, working closely with then Prime Minister Julia Gillard on the key foreign policy challenges facing Australia.
2013 – 2017
In 2013 I was appointed Australia’s Ambassador to Israel. My family and I spent four years there, working to advance ties in important areas including innovation, technology, and counter-terrorism, and helping to promote peace and stability in the broader Middle East.
I was elected to the Australian Parliament for the seat of Wentworth.
